INSIDE NORTHSTAR
Northstar Elementary School has educated generations of our students since 1960. The school has undergone expansions and updates through the years, but it is unable to accommodate 21st-century learning and presents our students and staff with a variety of challenges every day.
Main Entrance
The main entrance at Northstar is neither accessible nor ADA-compliant. The entrance also raises safety concerns because it lacks the level of secure entry common at many schools today. On especially warm days, the doors must be left open to allow air into the school to be circulated by large fans.
Temperature Control
On warm days, conditions inside Northstar Elementary are not usually comfortable. A combination of large fans, standing air conditioners, and window units run throughout the day in an effort to cool the school. In many cases, these measures are not enough to keep classrooms, hallways, and other areas from becoming uncomfortably warm.
Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing
Because of Northstar Elementary's age, many mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems and equipment are outdated, beyond their useful lifespan, and, in some cases, inactive. Repairing these systems is difficult and costly.
Flooring and Fixtures
Asbestos tiles, damaged flooring, and outdated fixtures are common at Northstar Elementary.
Pest Problems
Pest problems are common throughout the school. Ants are frequently visible in some classrooms where foundation and floor issues exist, while in others, bait stations hang from ceilings to attract and capture flying insects, including wasps. Steps have also been taken to alter the building's exterior to prevent bats from entering.
Limited Space For Activities
The undersized gymnasium at Northstar is also used as the school's cafeteria. This creates scheduling difficulties, especially when outdoor weather is not suitable for recess and physical education classes.
Playground Challenges
Much of the equipment and fixtures on the playground at Northstar Elementary are outdated, damaged, and, in some cases, too old to be replaced. Some pieces of playground equipment have been removed in the past to prevent students from being injured.
